Check out Mark's journey to Ingenious Innovators below

For quite a while now I have been experimenting with ideas and concepts to improve health and safety outcomes, equally for workers, subcontractors and businesses.

I have been fortunate enough to have worked for some great International and national businesses, some of them have had some great Managers who have trusted me to pilot and test some ideas and concepts, some of which have been shared internationally.

I was also privileged to have been part of an internal program in a large international company, where five of us from different business units, across two countries, collaborated and researched an idea to come up with an original solution. We chose Workplace flexibility, and not only did our team beat the other teams in New Zealand and Australia, but we also then went on to win the international segment beating the other teams around the world.

Ingenious Innovators is my outlet where I want to share ideas, concepts and solutions to larger audiences than just the places I work.  I have a dream to change the way health and safety is applied, not just in my places of work, not just in New Zealand, but around the world.

From sports fields to emergency services to health, safety and wellness professional

My passion for health and wellbeing began during my school days, competing in international sports. This exposed me to international athletes, where I learnt through training and competitions that discipline, health, and believing in goals can help you to achieve great outcomes or create unique learning opportunities, and that failure isn't the end of the road; it is the start of a learning journey.

This led me to pursue a national certificate in exercise science, where I learnt about health and wellness and being a personal trainer.

During my study, I joined the volunteer fire service. For 17 years, riding on fire engines and ambulances, I witnessed the profound impact of harm to people and property, and its ripple effect to impact many more people than those directly involved, such as family, friends, communities and first responders.

I have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to gain training and experience in many different disciplines.  This allows me to have a broad and open view of safety systems, especially when it comes to risk management.  I like the old saying, "A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one."
